When it comes to acne-prone skin, comedogenicity (the potential to clog pores) is a big deal. At Raw Rituale, we advise all our acne clients to avoid products that clog pores. After all, if your pores are already clogged, why make the problem worse?

So, what exactly does "comedogenic" mean?
Simply put, it refers to ingredients that clog pores by causing follicular hyperkeratosis—an increase in keratin production within hair follicles. This buildup leads to clogged follicles and, eventually, acne. However, this process isn’t instant. It can take months of using comedogenic products before breakouts become noticeable.

Why is comedogenicity so tricky?
The comedogenic effects of an ingredient can vary widely between individuals. What might clog one person’s pores in a few weeks could have no effect on someone else. This is because everyone's skin chemistry is different, and even non-comedogenic ingredients can cause issues depending on your unique skin enzymes. Plus, natural skin oils (sebum) are already comedogenic, so avoiding certain ingredients doesn’t guarantee you’ll be free of breakouts.

Ingredients on product labels are listed by quantity—so the first ingredient is the most abundant. If a category 3 ingredient is listed near the top, it could contribute to clogged pores and breakouts. If it’s listed toward the end, its effect may be minimal.
